Place names

In SENÖOŦEN, the language of the WSÁNE nations, the island is called P'AQwƎČ.

According to John Thomas Walbran, the island was "named by the early settlers, circa 1853, after ... James Douglas". Douglas was a major contributor to the Hudson's Bay Company and Second Governor of the Vancouver Island Colony. Walbran also writes: "Name adopted by Captain Richards, HMS Plumper, 1858." From 1857 to 1862, Richards supervised hydrographic surveys on the south coast of British Columbia.

history

The island is in the traditional territories of the Tsawout First Nation. Her last hereditary chief Louie Pelkey was born on the island in 1860. Although it is located east of the North Saanich Douglas Contract Area and south of the Hul'q'umin'um Contract Area , it is not part of any Douglas Contract Area .

In the early 1900s the island served so-called sport hunters, including the premier of the province between 1903 and 1915, Richard McBride . In 1913, a dynamite factory was built on the island, part of a company that merged with Canadian Explosives Ltd , which in turn changed its name to Canadian Industries Limited (CIL) in 1927 . From the beginning of World War II , the factory was run by Defense Industries Ltd , a subsidiary of CIL. The factory and many of its workers' houses had been moved from Nanaimo to the island. At its peak, the factory employed 800 people, most of whom lived in a small, traffic-free village on the opposite end of the island. During the Second World War, the factory produced 900 tons of TNT per month. The TNT facility closed in 1977, and the village was dismantled and moved off the island in 1979.

It was bought by Craig McCaw in 1994 for $ 19 million . Since then, there have been repeated legal action against ICI (formerly CIL) because the new owner was unable to colonize the island. In his opinion, this is due to the island's industrial history, which was well documented at the time of sale. The newest luxury resorts include a golf course, a yacht berth, a seaplane ramp and a runway.

McCaw has reportedly put environmental regulations in place on James Island that ban insecticides, move power lines, and use electric cars and golf carts for transportation. The island was the highest rated property in the Capital Regional District in 2009 at nearly $ 76 million . In June 2012, the island was launched at a cost of $ 75 million. It is reportedly no longer for sale.

ecology

According to the Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification of the British Columbia Forest Service , the entire island lies in the Coastal Douglas Fir Lowland.

Local administration

James Island is located in the Capital Regional District but also within the North Pender Island Local Trust Area of the Islands Trust . The regulation of land use is subject to the Islands Trust with the opinion of the North Pender Local Trust Committee . Local government affairs, apart from land use, are handled by the Regional District for the Southern Gulf Islands and by Electoral Area G. Both together elect a director.

Although the North Pender Local Trust Committee has authority over land use and there are no resident landowners on the island, James Island has its own official community plan and is independent from North Pender.
