James Jay Archer

James J. Archer (* 19th December 1817 in Bel Air , Maryland ; † 24. October 1864 in Richmond , Virginia ) was a brigadier general of the Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

On March 16, 1861, he joined the Confederate Army as a captain and was soon promoted to colonel in the 5th Texas Regiment. After the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31 and June 1, 1862 Archer was promoted to brigadier general and was given command of a brigade in the Division of General Ambrose Powell Hill . With his brigade he fought on June 26, 1862 at the Battle of Mechanicsville , on August 9, 1862 at the Battle of Cedar Mountain , on August 26, 1862 at Manassas Junction . From 12th to 15th September 1862 he also took part in the Battle of Harpers Ferry and from 11-15. December 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg . In between he supported General Robert Edward Lee on September 17th at the Battle of Antietam .

At the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg , Archer was captured on July 1, 1863 and imprisoned in Ohio . Released in the summer of 1864, he immediately returned to command of a brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia , which he commanded until his death on October 24, 1864.
