In 1978 he moved to Germany and in 1983 graduated from the University of Cologne with a diploma in German. From 1984 he worked for the English-speaking department of Deutsche Welle Radio. There he produced articles and interviews on pop music, cultural issues and the environment. In 1989 he switched from radio to television news. The news reports on Europe were broadcast worldwide outside of Germany, including in the European Journal program on the PBS channel.

From 1993, James Pastouna worked regularly for the Europa Semanal program, which was broadcast weekly in South America. Together with a cameraman, he traveled to the countries of South and Central America to produce news reports, for example about the flood dangers in Ecuador or the mission of a German priest in Nicaragua. Between 1993 and 1996 more than 40 TV contributions were made. Pastouna has been working mainly for WDR since 1996 . In 1996 he made his first documentary for the program series "God and the World" . The film reported the fate of HIV-infected children in Romania. In many other documentaries he dealt with topics such as Europe's last leper colony, young people in anti-aggression training or the story of the German prisoners of war in England in 1946 ( “How enemies became friends” ). He made two films about Guantanamo Bay. He also wrote a book on the subject, reminding us that the rule of law must remain the foundation of a democratic, peaceful and just world.
