James W. Pennebaker (born March 2, 1950 in Midland , Texas ) is an American professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin .

Life

James Pennebaker received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1977 . He was then until 1983 "Assistant Professor" in psychology at the University of Virginia , until 1987 "Associate Professor" at Southern Methodist University and there until 1997 Professor of Psychology. He then moved back to the University of Texas at Austin, where he has been teaching and researching as a psychology professor since 1997.

His most important research projects deal with language analysis in psychology. He examines the extent to which one can infer his personality or mental illness from the words that someone uses. To do this, he uses special analysis programs. One of these programs is LIWC (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count).
