James S. Brown Jr.

James Spencer Brown Junior (born March 16, 1892 in Montclair , New Jersey , † June 1, 1949 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American cinematographer .

Life

James Spencer Brown was born in New Jersey to a physicist. Before becoming known as a cameraman for Columbia Pictures , he began his career as an apprentice at Edison Studios in 1912 . From 1925 on in particular, Brown was responsible for several B-movie films as a cameraman. Although Brown was known throughout his life as a competent and capable cameraman and was a member of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1927 , as well as was recognized for his services as a cameraman during the First World War , he never got beyond the B-movie sector, which is probably was because he was an alcoholic .

Brown was married twice and had a daughter and a son with Katherine Brown. Brown committed suicide on June 1, 1949 when he shot himself in the head in front of his wife and neighbors.
