James Stewart of Lorne
Sir James Stewart of Lorne (* around 1395 , † around 1448 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family , called "the Black Knight of Lorne" (the Black Knight of Lorne).
James was a son of Sir John Stewart of Innermeath and his wife Isabel de Ergadia. His father had acquired the lordship of Lorn from his brother and was the Scottish ambassador to England. When his father died, in 1421, he inherited his older brother Robert, who in 1439 with the hereditary title first Lord Lorne to Lord of Parliament was charged.
James Stewart was a loyal comrade in arms of the Black Douglas and tried with this the overthrow of the Scottish regent Sir Alexander Livingston of Callendar. This ruled for the minor Jacob II , whose mother Joan Beaufort he imprisoned at Stirling Castle . James soon shared this fate as well, as a result of his unsuccessful overthrow attempt.
After his liberation, he finally married the Scottish ex-Queen (Queen-Dowager) Joan Beaufort, in 1439 with papal dispensation. He had three children with her:
- John (1440-1512), 1st Earl of Atholl 1457
- James (1445-1499), 1st Earl of Buchan 1469
- Andrew (1443–1501), Bishop of Moray 1483
James Stewart was killed by Flemish pirates while on a boat trip to England.
