James William McGauley

James William McGauley (* 1806 ; † 1867 ) was a physicist and professor of natural philosophy.

He studied from 1826 at St Patrick's College , Maynooth with Nicholas Callan . From 1836 to 1856 he was Professor of Philosophy on the Board of Education in Ireland.

At the meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Liverpool in 1837, he presented his self-interrupting electromagnet (similar to Wagner's 1836 hammer ).

In 1856 he went to Canada temporarily. Back in the UK, he became editor of the Scientific Review , a member of the Council of the Inventor's Institute in London and director of the Inventor's Patent Right Association .
