Jan Baranowski

Jan Baranowski (born December 26, 1800 in Sławków , † November 8, 1879 in Lublin ) was a Polish astronomer.

Live and act

Jan Baranowski studied at the Jagiellonian University and was director of the Warsaw observatory from 1848 to 1869 . Between 1862 and 1869 he was also a professor at the Warsaw secondary school .

In 1833 he calculated the orbit of Comet Biela . In 1854 he published the works of Nicolaus Copernicus known at the time in Latin and in Polish translation . This was the first critical edition of the Copernican works.

Since 1869 he lived as a pensioner with his brother Walenty Baranowski, the bishop of Lublin.
