Karol Hiller (born December 1, 1891 in Łódź , Russian Empire ; died probably on December 7, 1939 in the forests of Lućmierz, Zgierz municipality ) was a Polish painter , graphic artist and photographer .

Life

Karol Hiller studied chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1910 to 1912 , then at the Warsaw Polytechnic . During the First World War he was called up to the Russian army and evacuated to Russia. In Kiev he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he learned the aesthetics and technique of icon painting . During the October Revolution he was active on the left of the political scene.

In 1921 he came to Poland and settled in Łodź. Together with the left-wing poet Witold Wandurski, he was involved in organizing art exhibitions aimed at the general public. He created murals and book illustrations. From 1930 to 1937 he took part in the exhibitions of the Institute for Art Propaganda (IPS), where he showed abstract painting. As a photographer, he experimented with heliographics - the shadows of objects lying on light-sensitive paper.

He was an activist with the League for Defense of Human and Civil Rights.

After the German occupation of Poland, he was probably shot on December 20, 1939 in the forest in Lućmierz not far from Łodź in the mass execution carried out by the Germans .
