Jan Cober

Jan Cober (* 1951 in Thorn , Netherlands ) is a Dutch conductor and musician .

Life

Jan Cobers musical work began in 1966 when he studied clarinet and music director at the Maastricht Conservatory, which he crowned with the "Prix d´Excellence" after nine years. A position as principal clarinetist of the Dutch radio orchestra was followed in 1975 by the position of solo clarinetist with the residence orchestra in The Hague. During this time he continued to deepen his already excellent conducting skills with renowned conductors such as Neéme Jàvi , Willem van Otterloo and Ferdinand Leitner . Invitations as a guest conductor to orchestras around the world soon followed. International festivals have taken him as a conductor to Berlin , Boston , Sydney and Valencia . Jan Cober conducted almost all symphony orchestras in the Netherlands, but then made the decision to specialize in wind music.

Since 1976 Jan Cober has been professor of clarinet and conducting at the Conservatories in Tilburg and Maastricht and at the European Institute for Music in Trento / Italy. He also regularly gives master classes in conducting on an international level. From 1983 to 2004 he was chief conductor of the world-famous Koninklijke Harmonie Thorn, with whom he was able to set a highlight at the WMC in Kerkrade in 1997 by winning the world championship title in the concert division for harmony orchestras. Furthermore, he leads the orchestra Koninklijke Harmonie "Sainte Cécile" Eijsden (with which he also became world champion in the concert division in Kerkrade in 2009), the European youth wind orchestra and the symphonic wind orchestra of the Swiss Army.

From 2002 to 2008 Cober was chief conductor of the Rundfunk-Blasorchester Leipzig and artistic director of the Wind Academy Saxony.
