Jan Emmens

Jan Ameling Emmens (born August 17, 1924 in Rotterdam , † December 12, 1971 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch art historian . He was Professor of Art History at the University of Utrecht and Director of the Netherlands Institute for Art History in Florence .

Life

Jan Emmens completed his school career at the Marnix Gymnasium in Rotterdam. In 1947 he began studying art history at the University of Utrecht. He assisted William Heckscher , who was a professor of iconography and early medieval art, in his work. In 1955 Emmens left the university and became director of the Netherlands Institute for Art History in Florence . He held this position until 1961 when he returned to Utrecht and wrote his doctoral thesis there in 1964. In 1967 he became a professor at the University of Utrecht. Jan Emmens held this position until his death. For a short time he was a member of the Rembrandt Research Project , which was founded in 1968. He planned to systematically study Rembrandt's iconography, but this was not implemented.
