Jan Krämer

Jan Krämer (* 1980 in Bonn ) is a German professor for business informatics and has held the chair for business informatics with a focus on the Internet and telecommunications industry at the University of Passau since October 2014 .

Life

Since October 2014, Krämer has been Professor of Business Information Systems and holds the Chair of Business Information Systems with a focus on the Internet and Telecommunications Industry at the University of Passau. He has headed the chair since April 2014 as a chair representative. He is also Joint Academic Director of the “Center on Regulation in Europe” (CERRE), a think tank based in Brussels and a member of the “European AI Alliance”.

From 2000 to 2005 he completed a degree in industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), as well as studying abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . He graduated with distinction with his thesis on Scheduling Independent Activities with Dedicated Resources . He then remained connected to KIT as a research assistant at the Institute for Economic Theory and Operations Research and later at the Institute for Information Management and Marketing, as well as a member of the interdisciplinary DFG graduate program "Information Management and Market Engineering". At KIT, he received his doctorate in 2007 with distinction for the thesis Service Bundling and Quality Competition on Converging Communications Markets: A Game-Theoretic Analysis . He completed his habilitation in 2013 on the subject of Tariffication, Prioritization and Regulation: Eight Essays on Telecommunications Markets and received the Venia Legendi in the field of business administration . He then worked in Karlsruhe as a private lecturer and head of the young research group Telecommunications Markets . In 2013, Krämer received the young talent award from the Association for University Lecturers in Business Administration.

Krämer's research examines business, strategic, and regulatory issues related to information and communication technologies, ICT companies, and ICT markets — especially those related to the telecommunications and internet economy. He pursues an interdisciplinary research approach in which he combines both theoretical and empirical methods of economics (primarily game-theoretical modeling and economic laboratory experiments) with elements from psychology, computer science or law. His current research interests are primarily in the economic regulation of Internet and telecommunications markets as well as digital ecosystems and data-driven business models.

Krämer has published numerous articles in renowned journals in the field of business informatics, marketing and economic regulation, such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Industrial Economics, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Business and Information Systems Engineering, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, Economics Letters, Environmental and Resource Economics, Review of Network Economics, Information Economics and Policy and Telecommunications Policy.

He is also the editor and author of several interdisciplinary books on the regulation of telecommunications markets, associate editor of the journal Business and Information Systems Engineering, member of the editorial board of the journals Review of Network Economics and Telecommunications Policy. He was also the organizer and editor of numerous academic conferences and is a regular scientific reviewer for a large number of outstanding journals such as Information Systems Research, Management Science or Management Information Systems Quarterly.

Krämer's research is regularly funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as well as other third-party donors and industrial partnerships. He also regularly advises leading companies in the telecommunications and internet industry as well as regulatory authorities, for example the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy or the Committee of European Regulators for Electronic Communication (BEREK).
