Jan Wielki (historically Johannes ; † 1497 in Kraków , Kingdom of Poland ) was one of the most important medieval painters in Kraków.

Life

Its origin is unknown. In 1466 he received the citizenship of the city of Krakow. His works have been known since the mid-1470s. Johannes had close contacts with other Krakow artists such as Marcin Czarny , Michael Haberschrack , and Veit Stoss . In 1495 he was referred to in a document as Magnus ( the Great , Wielki in Polish ).

His will has been preserved, and Marcin Czarny was appointed executor.

Altar painting in Warta

John created altar paintings in churches in the vicinity of Kraków. His works showed influences from the Dutch painters Rogier van der Weyden and Dirk Bouts , but also from Veit Stoss. They are among the most important paintings in Krakow of his time.
