Jan van Borssum Waalkes

Jan van Borssum Waalkes (born November 25, 1922 in Groningen , † 1985 ) was a Dutch botanist . His botanical author abbreviation is “ Borss.Waalk. ".

Live and act

Jan van Borssum Waalkes began studying biology at the University of Groningen in 1941 . After a war-related interruption from 1943 to 1945, he completed his studies with the candidate examination in 1946; In 1949 the doctorate followed. In 1950 he came to the Bogoriense Herbarium in Bogor on the Indonesian island of Java as an assistant , where he stayed until 1957. During this time the mallow family (Malvaceae) formed his research focus; he collected plants on Java, Krakatau, Sumatra and the Moluccas, among others. He undertook his botanical research on Krakatau after the volcanic eruption of Krakatau in October 1952; In the Indonesian magazine Penggemar Alam he described his experiences in this regard.

After returning to the Netherlands, he worked as a research assistant at the Botanical Garden in Groningen from 1961 . In 1966 he received his doctorate from the University of Leiden with his doctoral thesis Malesian Malvaceae revised .
