Jana Sýkorová (born June 9, 1973) is a Czech opera singer ( alto and mezzo-soprano ), who also appears as a song and concert singer.

biography

Jana Sýkorová studied singing at the Prague Conservatory of Music with Brigita Sulkova, took part in masterclasses by Eva Randová (Stuttgart) and Mikhail Tomashov (Sofia) and worked with Jiri Kotouc on baroque music. She has been a soloist at the Prague State Opera since 1999 , where she has performed important roles in the alto and mezzo-soprano fields, including Carmen , Fenena in Nabucco , Maddalena in Rigoletto , Ulrica in A Masked Ball , Olga in Eugene Onegin and leading roles in world premieres of contemporary operas. Since 2002 she has also been a regular guest at the Prague National Theater . a. also as Carmen and Katinka in Die Teufelskäthe . Her concert activities have also taken her as a soloist in oratorios and symphonic works in concert halls in various European countries.

Jana Sýkorová drew international criticism for her performance of Laurent Petitgirard's Elephant Man at the Nice premiere in 2002. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in July 2007 as Maddalena in Rigoletto, and in 2008 she also appeared as Mercedes in Carmen . She also performed Maddalena in Nice and Dijon, but the opera houses in Prague and other Czech cities continued to be the focus of her work as an opera singer.

Oratorios and symphonic works

Her concert repertoire includes the alto parts of oratorios and symphonic works from the Baroque to the modern. There are many works of romantic and late romanticism such as As the Requiem and The Holy Ludmilla by Antonín Dvořák, the Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, the Te Deum by Anton Bruckner, the Alto Rhapsody by Johannes Brahms, Altsoloparts the symphonies of Gustav Mahler.

Songs

Her repertoire of songs includes works by Czech composers such as Antonín Dvořák , Leoš Janáček , Bohuslav Martinů , by French composers, by Manuel de Falla and Dmitri Shostakovich . There are also orchestral song cycles by Richard Wagner ( Wesendonck songs ) and Gustav Mahler ( Kindertotenlieder , Das Lied von der Erde ).
