Janet Bostwick

Janet Bostwick , DBE (* 20th October 1939 ) is a politician of the Bahamas . She was the first MP in the Senate and was the first woman to be elected to the House of Assembly in 1982 . In 1992 she became the Bahamas' first female minister, and in 1998 she became the first acting prime minister.

biography

Janet Bostwick began her political career in 1976. In 1977 she was appointed member of the House of Lords (Senate). In 1982 she was elected to the House of Assembly as a member of the opposition Free National Movement (FNM ) party, re-elected in 1987 and 1992. She belonged to him until 2002.

After the FNM's election victory, she was appointed by Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham as Minister for Housing and Social Affairs in his cabinet in August 1992 . After a government reshuffle, she was appointed Minister of Justice and Immigration in 1994, before becoming both Foreign Minister and Attorney General after another cabinet reshuffle in 1995. She held the office of attorney general until 2001, while she held the office of foreign minister until the end of Ingrahams term after the election of the FNM in May 2002.

In that capacity, she served as the senior cabinet member in 1998 when the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister were absent as the Bahamas' first wife acting Prime Minister. She subsequently held this office on several other occasions.

She is married to John Bostwick , who was Senate President from 1992 to 2002 .
