The theater building in 1943

The history of today's Janka Kupala Theater dates back to 1887. In 1884 the building of the former city theater in Minsk burned down. At the initiative of Minsk Governor Trubetskoy, the city Duma decided on August 18, 1887 to build a new theater building. Architects Karol Kaslouski and Kanstanzin Uvjadsjenski were commissioned to build the theater. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone was opened by Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrowitsch and his wife Maria Pawlowa ( Marie von Mecklenburg ), they threw some gold coins on the property of the future building and laid the first foundation stones. The opening of the new theater took place on June 5, 1890.

In 1920 the theater received the status of the state theater and was reopened on September 14, 1920 as the Belarusian State Theater ( Беларускі Дзяржаўны Тэатр ). The first performances were dominated by productions with a strongly pronounced national theme, including the works of Janka Kupala and Michas Tscharot .

During the Second World War , the theater troupe worked in the Russian city of Tomsk, the actors showed the performances at the front and played in hospitals. The Belarusian Central Council used the building to hold the II Belarusian People's Congress here on April 27, 1944 .

In 1955 the theater was given the honorary title and status of "Academic Theater" and was officially declared one of the five best theaters in the Soviet Union .
