Grand Duke Vladimir with his family, 1883

On August 28, 1874, Grand Duke Wladimir married Princess Marie zu Mecklenburg , later Grand Duchess Maria Pawlowna, a daughter of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II , who in turn was a grandson of Tsar Paul I , and Auguste Reuss zu Köstritz . Five children emerged from the mutual connection:

⚭ 1905 Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
⚭ 1919 Zinaida Raschewskaya
⚭ 1921 Matilda Felixovna Kschessinskaya
⚭ 1902 Prince Nicolaos of Greece and Denmark

Vladimir's son Kyrill married his cousin Victoria Melita, a daughter of Vladimir's sister Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna . Tsar Nicholas II disapproved of this marriage because Victoria had only recently been divorced from his brother-in-law, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt . Cyril was then stripped of his special privileges and his military status. This led to an argument between Vladimir and the Tsar. However, after several deaths occurred in the imperial family, Kyrill received his title and status back and was now third in line to the Russian throne.
