The Jannersee , also called Riedsee , is a groundwater lake in Vorarlberg . It was created between 1961 and 1968 through gravel dredging. The Jannersee Triathlon , which has been held in August since 1994, begins at Jannersee , and in 2006 the Vorarlberg band Alldra released a song entitled “Jannersee”.

geography

In the 800 hectares large Lauteracher Ried is situated the Jannersee part of an ancient cultural landscape (see also: Europe reserve Lauteracher Ried ). The Lauteracher Ried is home to the largest peat storage areas in Vorarlberg with a thickness of up to six meters. This landscape is the center of the great Rhine valley moors . At the same time, the Lauteracher Ried is part of a large open space between the settlement areas Bregenz - Lauterach - Wolfurt - Schwarzach - Dornbirn - Lustenau - Fußach - Höchst and Hard . In this settlement-free area, the Jannersee is a popular swimming and excursion destination. There are no above- ground inlets, the lake is fed by a groundwater source and the water quality is good .

history

In the early 1960s, Erich Janner received a prospecting permit for a reed meadow on which an alluvial fan of the Bregenzerache lay. In the course of the gravel mining, the excavation hole was filled with groundwater, creating a lake. A dredger was used from 1965 until the gravel reserves at a depth of between 14 and 28 meters were exhausted. Most of the mining material was transported to Dornbirn and used for construction work. Since the excavation site had no embankment, the bank area went directly into the deep water. The community Lauterach pushed for a few years the name "Riedsee", but could not prevail against the already familiar name Jannersee.

Development to a bathing lake

After the dredging work stopped, three families bought the property. The western area, which is now open for swimming, was bought by the Ludescher family in 1974 and the bank renovated. In the 1970s and 1980s, there were illegal moped and car races around the lake. Cars had to be pulled out of the lake after accidents. The lake was also searched for victims of Jack Unterweger . When a driving and parking ban for the lake area was issued towards the end of the 1990s, it developed into a local recreation area. Since 1984 there has been a snack bar with catering in the bathing area.
