Japan Open 2000 (tennis)

The Japan Open 2000 was a tennis tournament of the WTA Tour 2000 for women and a tennis tournament of the International Series Gold of the ATP Tour 2000 for men in Tokyo . It took place from October 9th to October 15th, 2000 at the Ariake Tennis Forest Park . The prize money for the singles and doubles tournaments was $ 700,000, $ 100,000 more than last year. In singles, 56 players competed against each other, in doubles there were 28 pairings. The first eight seeded players received a bye into the second round.

The defending champion of the individual competition was the German Nicolas Kiefer , who did not run this year. It won the 12 seeded Dutchman Sjeng Schalken , who celebrated his first and only title of the season and his fifth title.

The unseed Indian pairing Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes won in doubles, succeeding Jeff Tarango and Daniel Vacek . While Vacek did not compete this year, Tarango, who was placed fifth with this year's partner Michael Hill , made it into the final for the second time in a row. For Bhupathi and Paes it was the first joint title of the season and the 16th joint title of their career. Both won a different tournament with other partners in the 2000 season.
