Japandroids ( JPNDRDS ) is a garage rock - band from Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada .
The band name results from a compromise between guitarist Brian King and drummer David Prowse, who each favored the names Japanese Scream and Pleasure Droids and finally agreed on a synthesis in the form of Japandroids , which they occasionally abbreviate JPNDRDS.
history
The Japandroids were founded in 2006 and consist of Brian King ( guitar ) and David Prowse ( drums ). They met at the University of Victoria , where King studied science and Prowse anthropology . At first they wanted an additional singer, but later decided to do without another member and split the singing among themselves. The band released two limited EP's All Lies (2007) and Lullaby Death Jams (2008) before signing with the Canadian independent label Unfamiliar Records in early 2009. Her debut album Post-Nothing was released in mid-2009. They were then signed to Polyvinyl in June 2009 .
In April 2009, the Japandroids were forced to cancel their first major tour of 28 North American cities after six weeks due to a health emergency. King was admitted to Calgary 's Foothills Hospital on April 24 with a life threatening ruptured ulcer .
