Japanese-German Society Tokyo

The Japanese-German Society e. V. in Tokyo is the largest of the more than 50 Japanese-German companies in Japan . It has around 800 members (as of March 2017). The main concern of the companies is to maintain the German culture and language in Tokyo and to promote relations between the two countries.

Examples of activities are the regular members 'table, the regulars' table for young Japanese and Germans, German courses, Japanese courses, German cooking, mulled wine seminars, wine tasting, Christmas parties, rediscovering Japanese culture , ikebana , kimono , visits to the disaster prevention center, visits to a sumobeya, organization of the JDG association meeting in Japan , Germany trip, members' magazine, calendar of events (events related to Germany in Tokyo), book publications, JDG youth meeting. history

On October 30, 1911, the then Japanese-German Society ( 日 獨 協會 , Nichidoku Kyōkai ) was founded under the chairmanship of Prince Kuni Kuniyoshi (1873-1929). He became the patron of the company. Other board members were Prince Katsura Tarō (General and Prime Minister of Japan, retired), President Aoki Shūzō ( Retired Secretary of State and Foreign Minister), Managing Director Nagai Nagayoshi and Honorary President Arthur Graf von Rex (German Ambassador). .

In 1914 all German members were expelled and all activities were suspended. In 1926 the activities were resumed as a foundation with Gotō Shimpei as president, Nagai Nagayoshi as vice president and Irisawa Tatsukichi as managing director.

On June 18, 1927, the Japanese-German Cultural Institute in Japan was founded as the counterpart of the Japanese Institute in Berlin 1926. The institute is independent of the JDG, but maintains close relationships with it. In 1945 both were dissolved.

On July 22, 1952, the JDG Tokyo was re-established with members of the pre-war JDG, the Japanese-German Cultural Institute Tokyo and others. December 16, 1953 it was recognized as a legal foundation ( 財 団 法人 , zaidanhōjin ).

In 1988 the Association of Japanese-German Societies (VJDG) was founded with the JDG Tokyo as the chairman.
