Jappe Nilssen
Jacob "Jappe" Nilssen (born January 25, 1870 , † spring 1931 ) was a Norwegian writer and important art critic.
Jappe Nilssen was a close friend of Edvard Munch , Oda Krohg and Hans Jæger . At times he belonged to the Bohème circles in the Norwegian capital Kristiania (now Oslo). Nilssen had a long relationship with Oda Krohg, who was ten years her senior and was married to the painter Christian Krohg for the second time . This unhappy love affair formed the background to Edvard Munch's symbolist painting Evening / Melancholie (1891). In his first literary work, the novel Nemesis (1896), Nilssen tells of the writer Nils Falk, who maintains a love affair with an older, married woman.
From 1908 until his death, Nilssen worked as an art critic for the Norwegian daily Dagbladet . Here he consistently stood up for the modern art of his time. In 1909, together with the director of the Nasjonalgalleriet , Jens Thiis, he organized a Munch exhibition which presented 100 paintings and 200 graphic works by the friend. The exhibition was a great success and paved the way for Munch's recognition in his home country.
Also in 1909 was a portrait of Nilssen by Edvard Munch. The painting Doctor Lucien Dedichen and Jappe Nilssen dates from 1925/26 . An older drawing by him shows Nilssen together with the playwright Henrik Ibsen in the Grand Café .
