Jarok ( Russian Ярок ) is an island in the Laptev Sea , a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean . The island lies in the mouth of the Jana River . Jarok is 38 km long and 26 km wide. There are many swamps, lakes and sand banks on the island.
The Jana Delta, in which the island is located, is an extensive wetland area. There is a severe arctic climate with frequent storms and blizzards . For eight months of the year the water of the Jana Delta is frozen so tightly that the island is connected to the mainland.
Administratively, Jarok belongs to the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) of the Russian Federation .
history
The first known Europeans to explore the area were the Russian trader Jakow Permjakow and his companion Merkuri Wagin . In 1712 they crossed the frozen Jana Bay from the mouth of the Jana River to the Great Lyakhov Island in the New Siberian Islands and explored the then unknown archipelago. On the way back, Permjakow and Vagin were killed by mutinous expedition members.
