Jakow Permjakow ( Russian : Яков Пермяков ; † 1712 ) was a Russian navigator and trader who discovered the New Siberian Islands .

While the Cossack sailed along the Siberian coast from the Lena to Kolyma in the East Siberian Sea in 1710 , he sighted unknown islands in the north. Permjakow was commissioned to lead a Cossack unit under Merkuri Wagin to the place of his discovery. In 1712 the group of 12 crossed with dogsled the Laptev Strait and entered the Great Lyakhov Island , the largest of the New Siberian Islands belonging Lyakhov Islands . The group saw other islands in the north, but because of the unfavorable ice conditions in the advanced spring and insufficient food supplies, Wagin did not cross over to them. On the painful way back, Permjakov, Wagin and two other men were killed by rebelling expedition members.
