Lyakhov Islands in the south of the New Siberian Islands |
The Lyakhov Islands ( Russian Ляховские острова , Yakut Ляхов арыылара ) are the southernmost islands of the New Siberian Islands . It is separated from the north Siberian mainland by the 60 km wide Laptev Strait , and from the Anjou Islands further north by the Sannikow Strait .
The islands were discovered in 1710 by the Cossack Jakow Permjakow , in 1712 he explored them together with Merkuri Wagin .
The archipelago is dominated by the Big Lyakhov Island (Большой Ляховский), which is approx. 4,600 km² and protrudes up to 270 m above the sea, and the Small Lyachow Island (Малый Ляховский), which is 1,325 km² in size. Another island is Stolbowoi (Столбовой остров). The Semenovsky Island (Семёновский остров) is gone to 1950 in the sea. The Vasilyevsky Island was in 1936 no longer be found. In 2013 a newly emerged island was discovered and named Jaja .
The name of the island goes back to Ivan Lyachow , a trader who explored the islands in 1773 in the hope of finding mammoth bones and ivory . He then claimed that the amount of mammoth bones and tusks was so enormous that one could think that the islands consist of them. A similar picture is said to have emerged on the other islands of the archipelago .
On May 29, 2013, the discovery of a very well-preserved mammoth carcass with muscle tissue and liquid blood was announced. The remains of the animal were in the permafrost of the Little Lyakhov Island.
