The Bungeland ( Russian Земля Бунге , Semlja Bunge , Yakut Бунге сирэ , Bunge sirä ) is a large sandbank in the New Siberian Islands in the Arctic Ocean . Administratively it belongs to the Russian Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) .
geography
The approximately 6,200 km² large bungeland connects as a land bridge the island of Kotelny in the west with the island of Faddejewski in the east, which makes the combined land mass with an area of around 23,200 km² the fourth largest island in Russia. The six to eight meter high, vegetation-free land bridge is regularly flooded during storm tides. The bungeland is named after Alexander von Bunge , a German-Russian doctor and explorer who led an expedition to the New Siberian Islands in 1886.
