The De Long Islands ( Russian Острова Де-Лонга / Ostrowa De-Longa , Yakut Де Лоҥ арыылара / De Long aryylara ) are an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean . Geographically they are considered part of the New Siberian Islands , administratively they belong to the Russian Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
The uninhabited islands were discovered during an expedition by the American polar explorer George W. DeLong at the end of the 19th century. They consist of five main islands, namely Bennett Island ( Остров Беннетта ), Henrietta Island ( Остров Генриетты ), Jeannette Island ( Остров Жаннетты ) as well as the two not until 1913 and 1914 during the "Arctic Ocean" expedition under the Arctic Ocean under the direction of Boris Wilkizki discovered islands Wilkizki Island ( Остров Вилькицкого ) and Shokhov Island ( Остров Жохова ).
The islands are all around 77 degrees north latitude and 155 degrees east longitude . The Bennett, Henrietta and Jeannette Islands are partially glaciated . The total area of the islands is 243 km² , the glacier 80.6 km².
