The Little Lyakhov Island ( Russian Малый Ляховский ) is the second largest of the Lyachow Islands with 1,325 km² . Geographically, it belongs to the New Siberian Islands .
It is located north of the Big Lyakhov Island . To the north, the Sannikow Strait separates it from the Anjou Islands .
It is named after the Russian trader Ivan Lyachow , who explored the archipelago from 1770 to 1775 in search of mammoth bones and ivory .
On May 29, 2013, the discovery of a very well-preserved mammoth carcass with muscle tissue and liquid blood was announced. The remains of the animal were in the permafrost of the Little Lyakhov Island.
