The Big Lyakhov Island ( Russian Большой Ляховский , Yakut Ляхов улахан арыыта) is the largest and southernmost of the Lyakhov Islands in the archipelago of the New Siberian Islands . It is uninhabited.

The island is 4,600 km 2 in size. Its highest elevation, the Emy Tas , at 293 m , is located in the extreme southeast near Cape Shalaurov. The 45 km wide Laptev Strait separates the island from the Siberian mainland .

It was discovered in 1710 by Jakow Permjakow , who explored it for the first time in 1712 together with Merkuri Wagin . The name of the island goes back to Ivan Lyachow (Иван Ляхов), a trader who explored the islands in 1773 in the hope of finding mammoth bones and ivory .
