From 1973 to 2004 he was Professor of Optics and Physics in the Photoengineering Department at Cologne University of Applied Sciences . Since then he has been working at the Institute for Applied Optics and Electronics.

After working as a freelance photographer for DPA in Africa and the Middle East in the early 1970s , from 1974 onwards he mainly traveled to the Himalayas, Tibet, India and Cambodia, specializing in panoramic photography from 1976 onwards. In collaboration with various universities and museums, documentaries on cultural monuments of the regions and projects for their preservation were created. Between 1981 and 1994, in collaboration with Roger Goepper from the Museum of East Asian Art (Cologne), he developed a photographic documentation of the wall paintings in the temples of Alchi and founded the Save Alchi Project with Karl Ludwig Dasser from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences . His photo documentation of the reliefs from Angkor Wat led to the German Apsara Conservation Project at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, of which he was co-director alongside Hans Leisen from 1995 to 2005.

Poncar developed further documentation on the wall paintings in the monastery of Tabo in Spiti and Toling in Guge . For the German Research Foundation and the American Himalayan Foundation , photo work was done in the Kingdom of Mustang . In addition, illustrated books about the Loire Valley and Paris were created on trips to France. Between 1977 and 1987 Poncar made documentaries with the cameraman and filmmaker Wolfgang Kohl in India, Pakistan and Tibet. In 2013 he received a practical scholarship at Villa Massimo in Rome.
