Ingleton and the Ingleton Viaduct

Ingleton is a place with 2000 inhabitants (2001) in North Yorkshire , England . The place on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales is a starting point for the climb to Mount Ingleborough , which rises near the settlement.

The River Greta is crossed by the Ingleton Viaduct in Ingleton . The viaduct was built between 1858 and 1860 by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway . When the line via Ingleton went into operation on September 16, 1861 as the shortest route between London and Scotland at the time, the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, which was to operate the route south of the viaduct, was merged with the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) the northern connection was operated by the Midland Railway instead of the North Western Railway . Since the Midland Railway worked together with the Great Northern Railway , which was a main competitor of the London and North Western Railway in the traffic between London and Scotland, Ingleton became a matter of dispute between the two companies. The LNWR did everything in its power to ensure that there was no direct transfer connection between it and the Midland Railway trains, and passengers also had to walk over the viaduct, as both companies had their own station at each end. Only when a new route was planned did the LNWR enter into negotiations with its competitor and in 1865 the lawsuits against the maladministration in Ingleton came to an end and the trains from the south crossed the viaduct, although the southern station remained a stopping point. Scheduled passenger traffic over the viaduct was discontinued in 1954. Excursion trains and freight trains continued to run until 1967, but then the line was dismantled.

Close to Ingleton are the tourist accessible White Scar Caves and Ingleborough Cave as well as the Gaping Gill Cave. In the limestone landscape surrounding the place there are numerous other caves that are accessible to experienced cave explorers.

A popular short hike from Ingleton is the 5-mile Ingleton Waterfalls Trail , which circles the Twiss and Doe rivers back into town.
