The Ingleborough is with 723 m the second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales in Northern England and with a notch height of 427 m a Marilyn . The mountain lies in the southwest of the Yorkshire Dales and is the highest point in a triangle formed by the towns of Ingleton , Ribblehead and Settle .
The name of the mountain is derived from Old English . The term "burh" means 'fortified place' and in fact on the north and east sides of the summit lie the remains of a fortification attributed to the Brigantes , the largest Iron Age tribe in Britain.
The summit plateau has a circumference of about 800 m and has a thin sward of turf. At the top there is a windbreak with an explanation of the view. On a clear day you can see Manod Mawr 166 km away in Snowdonia in North Wales. The mountains of the Lake District National Park such as the Helvellyn are also clearly visible . The view extends over to the city of Lancaster and the adjoining Morecambe Bay . On the summit there is a marker and a trigonometric point from the Ordnance Survey (no. P. 5619).
Ingleborough can be climbed from different sides as part of the Three Peaks Walk .
