Settle is a town of 2400 inhabitants (2001) in North Yorkshire , England . Historically, Settle was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire , on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales .

It is believed that Settle was founded by the Angles in the 7th century, as the name of the town is said to mean "settlement" in their language. Henry III granted Henry de Percy the market rights for the place in 1248 . Since then, there has been a market every Tuesday in the city to this day. A bridge over the Ribble River is first mentioned in 1498.

In the 18th century, the cotton mill became the town's main employer. There were five spinning mills in town.

In 1875 the Settle-Carlisle railway opened and the town received a train station. The Museum of North Craven Life in Folly has exhibits on local themes.
