Francisco Javier Ortega Smith-Molina (born August 28, 1968 in Madrid ) is a Spanish lawyer and politician of the Vox party . He is also an Argentinian citizen .

Life

Ortega Smith is the son of Víctor Manuel Ortega Fernández-Arias (lawyer) and Ana María Smith-Molina Robbiati. The parents met in Ana María's hometown of Buenos Aires and moved to Spain. Ortega Smith has three siblings and studied law, the first four years at the Complutense University in Madrid and finally graduated from the University of Alcalá . He later graduated from the Faculty of Law and Economics (ICADE) of the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid.

During his military service he was a member of an elite unit.

Political activity

In 1994 Ortega Smith ran unsuccessfully for the European elections on the "Foro" list, a critical civil platform from the far-right political spectrum, which was then headed by Eduard Punset i Casals, a Spanish politician, lawyer and economist. The forum's concerns ranged from concerns about "the threat to individual freedoms to the bureaucratization of the political system".

Ortega Smith works as a lawyer in Madrid; Among other things, he worked for "Denaes", a foundation for the defense of the Spanish nation ( Fundación para la Defensa de la Nación Española ), where he met Santiago Abascal , the head of the foundation and founder of the Vox party , of which he has been general secretary since 2016. In the past, Ortega Smith has repeatedly praised José Antonio Primo de Rivera , the founder of the fascist Falange party .

Ortega Smith has been a member of the Congreso de los Diputados since May 21, 2019 . Ortega Smith has also been a member of Madrid City Council since June 15, 2019.

arrest warrant

A British arrest warrant has been placed on Ortega Smith since he and other Vox activists removed a concrete block from British waters near Gibraltar in June 2014 , which was supposed to prevent Spanish fishing boats from casting their nets there.

In 2016, Ortega Smith hit the headlines again when he illegally swam into Gibraltar (due to the warrant) to join a group of six Vox activists who had traveled overland with the aim of finding a 168 square meter and 35 kilos unrolling spanish flag on british rock.
