Marian column - executioner's column ID: 2158 |
Small monument |
Meggauerstraße location |
1750 | The hangman's column stands in the green area between the blocks of Zibermayrstraße 8 and 14. An inscription plaque was set into the high base of the column, the recess of which can still be seen. A slightly conical stone pillar stands on the base, on top of which is a plate in which four cast iron rods are embedded and which carry a canopy with a cross. High quality baroque pietà under this canopy. The seated Mary brings a cloth to the tearful eyes, Christ lies in her lap, she holds his left hand.
The column originally stood in the New World at Wiener Straße 226 ( ⊙ ). The condemned to death near the place of execution are said to have said their last prayer before her. Hence the name "hangman's pillar". It is therefore always seen in connection with the Trinity Column on Bulgariplatz , the "penultimate" station. |
