Jayandra Soni

Jayandra Soni (Hindi: जयेन्द्र सोनी Jayendra Sonī, * 1947 in Stanger , Natal , South Africa ) is an Indian-born , South African Indologist .

Life

Soni studied philosophy and religious studies at the universities in Durban , Varanasi and Hamilton . In 1978 he received his PhD in Philosophy on The Human Predicament: A Critique of Some Philosophical Perspectives and in 1987 in Religious Studies on Toward an Understanding of Man in Śaiva Siddhānta: A Study in Philosophical Anthropology .

From October 1991 until his retirement in May 2012 he worked as a lecturer at the Philipps University in Marburg in the department of Indology and Tibetology . There he taught the Indian languages Sanskrit , Hindi and his mother tongue Gujarati as well as Indian philosophy , in particular yoga and Jaina philosophy .

After working in Marburg, he moved to Austria and part-time holds seminars on Indian philosophy at the University of Innsbruck . In early 2012 he was elected General Secretary of the International Association of Sanskrit Studies (IASS).
