from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jazz-Collegium Berlin is a Berlin jazz band and plays a strongly swinging Dixieland and mainstream jazz à la New Orleans . Band founder Hartmut Behrsing and the singer Ruth Hohmann are considered to be the pioneers of old-time jazz in the GDR .

history

The band was founded in 1972 by Hartmut Behrsing, professional musician at the Komische Oper in East Berlin .

Founding cast:

  • Ernstgeorg Hering (trumpet)
  • Bernhard "Omme" Behrend (bass)
  • Rolf Zenker (piano)
  • Hartmut Behrsing (trumpet)
  • Hans-Jochen Schulze (drums)
  • Wolfgang Riemer (clarinet)

The band had their first engagement on the GDR vacation ship MS “Völkerfreundschaft” . In 1973 she took part in the International Dixieland Festival Dresden for the first time .

In 1974 Horst Würzebesser (bass), also a professional musician at the Komische Oper, and Ruth Hohmann joined the band. Behrsing and Hohmann had already worked together on the " Jazz Optimists ". A permanent collaboration developed between the "First Lady of Jazz" of the GDR and the Jazz-Collegium Berlin .

In 1976 the pianist Rolf Zenker died in a traffic accident. Behrsing, who now led the band, switched to the piano and Heinz Lippold and Wolfgang “Bongo” Müller, who previously played with the “Dixieland Allstars”, joined the band. So a novelty in Dixieland was born. The four-player set with two trumpets was a previously atypical band line-up.

When Behrsing left the band in 1980, Wolfgang Eckardt joined the band and Heinz Lippold took over the musical direction. He wrote the arrangements and thus shaped the musical profile of the band. A year later the band took part in the international jazz festival in 's-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands). Further tours in western countries followed.

From 1982 to 1988 Schorsch Dittrich played bass. He was replaced by Stefan Lasch (previously "Tower Jazz Band"). After Riemer left the GDR in 1989, “Mäcki” Gäbler joined the band. In 1999 the late Heinz Lippold was replaced by Hans-Jochen Schulze.

In 2000, the band founder Hartmut Behrsing returned. The band was reassigned. Hans-Georg Hentschel came for “Bongo” and Patrick Braun for “Mäcki”. Hentschel previously played with the "Hot Pipers" and "Papa Ko" and directed the jazz big band "Jazz Company Berlin". A year later the band took part in the 1st Jazz & Blues Award in Berlin. Schulze died in 2002. Karl Vetter came for him and Lasch became the band leader . From 2005, Andreas Hentschel sat on drums and Volker Kaufmann on the piano. He had learned his trade with the “Jazz Optimists” and previously played with the “ Jazz Makers Berlin ”. In 2015 Volker Kaufmann died and Dieter Janik joined the band.
