From 1961 he first studied trombone and piano at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin ( state examination 1964); In 1974 he passed another state examination as a conductor (state examination 1974). From 1982 he played again with the (newly formed) Dixieland All-Stars Berlin , with whom he appeared in the USA and at numerous major festivals in Europe. In 1999 he founded his ensemble Jazz im Frack , which took up the idea of the series of the same name, which he has directed at the Komische Oper since 1986. In their programs he successfully combined jazz with classical music. He performed Scott Joplin's ragtime opera Treemonisha , but also works by Carla Bley , Hannes Zerbe and himself.

Behrsing composed chamber music and symphonic pieces, but also film music for numerous television films, including the title music (which takes up the original, third stream elements) for the series Polizeiruf 110 , as well as the soundtrack for several episodes of the series, but also music for fairy tale records and ballet and stage music.
