action

Once again, Mischa is turned away by the young Doris Schubert, daughter of a sexton . He knows that Küster Schubert rejects him as a possible son-in-law and is furious. Slightly drunk he drives with his friend Peter to the church where the sexton does his job. Mischa wants to talk to the sexton alone, but a short time later brings Peter into the interior of the church: sexton Schubert is lying lifeless in the chancel, next to him is a Madonna figure and a candlestick. While Peter Mischa is still making accusations, the light is turned off and the church door is locked. The young men ring the bells and get help.

First Lieutenant Jürgen Hübner and Lieutenant Vera Arndt take over the investigation. Schubert is taken to hospital with a life-threatening injury. The pastor finds an identical statue of the Madonna behind the altar and believes it is a miracle. Jürgen Hübner sees the case more realistically: After a detailed examination, one of the two figures can be identified as a fake. It turns out that Schubert is actually a restorer and wood carver. He once worked with the freelance art historian Dr. Schneider and museum director Bonk together. One day Schubert was suspected of having removed original stones from antiques and replaced them with imitations. The originals were sold to wealthy buyers. Although Schubert could not prove the act, he quit his job out of hurt pride. He became sexton of the church, but runs his own restoration workshop on the church premises. Doctor and collector Dr. Eberhard Kunze has repeatedly given his sculptures to Schubert for restoration. When he wants to pick up a piece, he is questioned by the police. The sculpture, which has just been restored for Kunze, has long been in his family's possession.

In Mischa Burger's apartment, the investigators, who meanwhile found the art expert Lieutenant Dr. Binder used a sculpture of Johannes in their investigation. It is also fake, but not finished yet. The original is in the Köckritzer Heimatmuseum and Dr. Binder demonstrates on site how easily the original could be exchanged for a forgery. Many originals were probably exchanged for fake sculptures without the theft being noticed.

Vera Arndt learns that Schubert died of his injuries in the hospital. She brings the news to daughter Doris, who then plays a blackmail report to Vera that she received on tape two days ago . In it, the man demands that the fake Johannes sculpture be deposited in a locker. Doris follows the instructions. A few hours later the figure is picked up and the perpetrator escapes in a car. The police followed him and finally arrested him - it was Dr. Eberhard Kunze. He owns numerous original carvings that have been replaced by deceptively real forgeries in their actual locations. Hehler was Dr. Schneider, who in turn blackmailed the restorer Schubert. Schneider and Schubert once worked together to steal gemstones because Schubert, who was addicted to alcohol after his wife's death, needed money. Schneider now put Schubert under pressure. Schubert made the copies for Schneider, but thought that Schneider wanted to sell them to collectors. When he surprised Schneider in the church when he exchanged the Madonna, it came to a duel and Schneider knocked Schubert down. When Mischa and Peter came into the church, Schneider snuck out of the room and locked the church. He didn't think that the seriously injured Schubert needed a doctor, but wanted to get a head start. Schneider admits the act when he learns that Schubert is dead. He is arrested. Mischa is now relieved of any suspicion and a reconciliation with Doris takes place.

production

One Madonna too many was filmed from June 5 to July 19, 1973 in Dresden (Leubnitz-Neuostra, Loschwitz, Blasewitz) as well as in Bautzen and Freiberg . The main location of the film is the Leubnitz-Neuostra church in Dresden. The chase at the end of the film led through Loschwitz and Blasewitz , among others . The costumes for the film were created by Ruth Karge and Isolde Müller-Claud , the film structures were created by Hans Völker . The film experienced on 18 November 1973 at the first program of the television of the GDR its television premiere.

It was the 20th episode of the Polizeiruf 110 film series . First Lieutenant Jürgen Huebner investigated in his 7th and Lieutenant Vera Arndt in her 16th case. After the alarm at the lake , it was the second time that art theft or counterfeiting was the subject of a police call. Critics praised the fact that the church was portrayed positively in the film as a “social welfare institution”, since the restorer Schubert had become a drinker after the death of his wife and had received a new meaning in life through his work as a sexton. The film also takes "the side of young people who are quickly condemned because of their often not immediately visible attitudes."
