Gertrud Brendler

Gertrud Brendler (born October 23, 1898 in Dresden ; † August 26, 1983 there ) was a German actress .

Life

After completing her acting training, Brendler made her debut in Görlitz in 1919 in Schiller's tragedyThe Bride of Messina ” at the age of 21. This was followed by a job on a stage in Bautzen before she played again at a local venue, the Albert Theater in Dresden. When the National Socialists seized power in 1933, the artist was banned from working as Brendler stood up for her Jewish fellow actors. In order to be able to earn a living, she worked during this time as a housekeeper or factory worker, occasionally as an actress on smaller stages.

After the end of the war she resumed her stage work at the State Theater in Dresden, where she - with the exception of a brief engagement in Leipzig - worked as an actress into old age. Since the mid-1950s she has also made extensive film work for DEFA and television in the GDR , where she made her debut in 1954 as Mrs Globig in Dudow's Stronger Than the Night . Numerous film and television assignments followed, whereby she was preferred as a resolute, courageous woman or a loving grandma.
