Glück im Hinterhaus is a DEFA German feature film by Herrmann Zschoche from 1980 . It is based on the novel Buridan's donkey by Günter de Bruyn .

The librarian Karl Erp, who is just over forty years old, is a married father of two children. One day he falls in love with his young colleague Fraulein Broder.

After a while the relationship between the librarian and his colleague at work deepened so much that he told his wife Elisabeth that he had never loved her. Karl would like to leave the previously happy marriage behind and move in with his lover.

After a time with Fraulein Broder that was pleasant for the librarian, he found himself feeling insecure: He found it difficult to endure the tightness, the thin walls and the noise in the rear building. Through a hasty job swap, which is like an escape, Fraulein Broder forces a decision from Karl. He eventually returns to his wife and two children. Upon his return, he notices that his wife has changed during his absence.

However, due to the inconsistent, slack staging, the film loses a lot of its subtle explosiveness. "
