occupation

Simply Flowers on the Roof is a comedic GDR contemporary film from 1979 about a Berlin working class family who buys a used, but representative car. The DEFA production was voted best comedy of the year by the GDR film critics.

action

The Berlin-based Blaschke family has twins, making them six. The family Trabi is now much too small. Father Hannes, a trained high-voltage fitter, and his brigade colleagues at VEB Maschinen- und Materialreserven find a decommissioned GAZ-13 Tschaika representative car . The black luxury sedan, which previously served major political figures, is purchased for Ost-Mark per kilogram.

The former state coach gives its new owner unexpected honors: People armed forces standing at attention, pioneer groups, invitations to cocktail receptions. While his wife Maxi sees the state car merely as a useful means of transportation, the actually modest Hannes annoys his colleagues with his new airs. They also give him an effective lesson by “simply painting flowers on the roof”.

Ms. Blaschke is a bus driver by profession and can therefore handle large vehicles, while the trot driver Hannes has a very difficult time. The question of whether normal people are allowed to drive such a state car at all occupies politicians up to the responsible minister and is then quickly decided by his secretary.
