Our man is king is a seven-part television series that was produced and broadcast by East German television in 1980 . The director and scriptwriter was Hubert Hoelzke , the scenario was written by Eva Stein and Maria Dahms. Prominent actors from the GDR could be hired for the main roles as well as for many supporting roles.

The episodes each had a running time of one hour and were broadcast on Friday evening at 8 p.m. on the first program of GDR television.

The series was released on DVD in 2013 .

The foreman Gerhard König ( Horst Drinda ) moves with his wife Helga ( Annekathrin Bürger ) and the children Bärbel ( Doris Otto ) and Ralf (Stephan Naujokat) to the small town of Derenburg and is elected to the city council. In this capacity he is committed to the interests of the citizens and does not give up despite many difficulties.

König looks after an application that his brigade member Schorsch Redlich ( Carl Heinz Choynski ) submitted to the Derenburg town hall and which has remained unanswered since then. He realizes that it is not easy to achieve change.

Episode 2: Talking is silver ... (November 14, 1980)
König and the caretaker Frieda Hellriegel ( Evamaria Bath ) are looking for the originator of rumors that are worrying the residents and the mayor. - König has a conflict with his son Ralf.

Episode 3: Going along - caught up (November 21, 1980)
König must first clearly express his opinion to his son Ralf and other young people because of their behavior and then regain their trust in a serious situation.

Episode 4: Loner (November 28, 1980)
König wants his neighbors, the pensioners Ida Peschke ( Marga Legal ) and Otto Krause ( Walter Jupé ), to fulfill a request that also has an impact on other residents.
