action

Pensioner Paul Wositschka has spent a pleasant afternoon with his son Michael, daughter-in-law Judith and his two grandchildren and is bringing the family to his old apartment, where Grandma Lisa has prepared the coffee table. Lisa herself is found dead in the kitchen by Paul, she died of old age. Paul now has to cope on his own. He does not want to move out of his large apartment and reacts bitterly when his neighbor and friend Otto Kabulke moves into an old people's home. He rejects such a move because the pensioners there are only living on their past. Until a few years ago Paul was the main cashier of the tram, but on principle he does not take part in a pensioner trip of the company.

On the way from the cemetery, where he regularly visits Lisa's grave, Paul runs for the bus one day and overlooks an approaching car. He is hit, but not further injured. Lt. Peter Fuchs and Lieutenant Vera Arndt happened to be at the scene of the accident, taking Paul to the hospital and later looking at his apartment out of curiosity. Vera Arndt runs into Paul again later while fishing and they both have a short conversation.

Paul's hope lies in his son Michael, who is planning to build a house. In the house, which the graphic artist has already completely designed, there is also a room for Paul. Michael wanted to get Paul to stay after Lisa's death, but the plan failed because of the lack of space. Paul firmly expects the house to be built, but ignores that Michael has neither money nor land. Paul Michael brokered a possible plot of land on the Havel through Otto , but the owner wanted a car and 20,000 marks for the site. Paul slips Michael 1,000 marks, which is just a drop in the ocean. Michael does not want to take away hope from Paul and does not admit that he cannot acquire the property. Paul only learns by chance that the property has gone to someone else and is as sad as it is disillusioned. He does not want to give up his dream, but has to realize that he cannot even raise 10,000 marks even with the sale of some valuables.

When visiting his previous job, he picks up some personal items from the tram depot. A key falls into his hand that belongs to the safe with the main income. He goes to his company's Christmas party, gets drunk and finally steals funds amounting to 24,000 marks unnoticed. When he wants to bring the money to his apartment, he is approached by a resident who thinks he is sick because he is very pale. Paul flees. The theft is noticed at his previous job. Peter Fuchs and Vera Arndt take over the investigation and learn from the main cashier that there are two keys to the safe that are available - but possibly more, but only his predecessor Paul could say that. There is no one in Paul's apartment and so the investigators look for him with the help of Michael and Judith. You can find him at Lisa's grave. He is holding the bag with the stolen money in his arms. Paul talks confusedly before collapsing in the snow. He is being taken to the hospital; it is not certain whether he will survive the ambulance.

production

The Potsdam Brandenburg Gate, a location for the film

Herbstzeit was filmed from January 10 to March 3, 1978 under the working title of old age in Potsdam . You can see the Brandenburg Gate and the Ernst von Bergmann Clinic , among others . The film structures were created by KPM Wulff . The investigators in the film are Peter Fuchs in his 38th case and Vera Arndt in her 39th case. The film had its television premiere on December 11, 1979. Originally, the film was produced as a result of the TV series Polizeiruf 110 , but was broadcast outside the series due to the marginal investigative work. He belongs with it, like the films:

to the police call episodes produced which, for various reasons, were not included in the police call series or were not allowed to be broadcast.

criticism

For film-dienst , autumn was a "convincingly played drama by GDR television that picks up on a topic with a thoroughly capitalist touch."
