The Ernst von Bergmann Clinic is a municipal hospital in the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam . It is in the form of a profit company operated and is, according to number of beds, according to the Carl-Thiem-Klinikum Cottbus is the second largest specialized hospital in Brandenburg. The hospital has around 1100 beds and is the Charité's academic teaching hospital .

Every year around 2,000 children are born in the clinic, 48,000 people are first treated in the emergency room and 39,500 patients are treated as inpatients (data as of July 2019).

History of the clinic

The hospital emerged from the former municipal hospitals of Potsdam with over 60 locations. The city of Potsdam's plague hospital was built on this site as early as 1756 . The exterior of the house was largely preserved and is still used today for patient care, of course with modern rooms that are adapted to today's standards. In 1899, the first appendix operation was performed in Potsdam by the guest doctor at the time, Privy Councilor Ernst von Bergmann (1836–1907). This is the namesake for the clinic.

For a long time the clinic was run with the departments of surgery and internal medicine .

Large parts of the hospital were destroyed by Allied bombing during the Second World War , especially during the air raid on Potsdam on the night of April 14th to 15th, 1945. After 1945, major construction work began to rebuild destroyed buildings and add new ones. A gynecological clinic was created and a pathology department was set up.

At the end of the 1960s, the then district hospital of the Potsdam district was broken down into more than 20 specialist departments, which essentially corresponds to the current structure. In 1983 the newly built high-rise bed building was put into operation. Among other things, the eye clinic , the ear, nose and throat department , urology , neonatology and the women's clinic were integrated into the location. The discipline for internal diseases has also been broken down into specialist departments such as nephrology , gastroenterology , endocrinology , hematology , oncology and cardiology .

The psychiatry department was opened as a new discipline in October 1992 and was able to move into the new building in the Potsdam-Babelsberg branch in November 1996 . In addition to the psychiatry and the day clinic for psychiatry, the infection department and the rabies advice center from the former location in Hermannswerder can be found there.

In 1997, the surgical clinic was significantly expanded in its range of services by restructuring it into "General and Visceral Surgery , Accident and Reconstructive Surgery, and Vascular and Thoracic Surgery ". The neurology could start operating as a new department in September 1997th

After further restructuring and two more new buildings, the clinic has been expanded.

The new functional surgery center went into operation on November 16, 2007. The operative intensive care unit , the conservative intensive care unit as well as new operating theaters , the endoscopy center and a larger emergency room with a helicopter landing platform have moved into the roof.

On July 12, 2008, the new “Center for Gynecology and Pediatrics” was put into operation. It houses the first children's emergency room in the state of Brandenburg . With the new building for the center for gynecology and paediatrics, the clinic received new premises for the care of women, infants and premature babies. In addition to the delivery rooms and a ward for women who have recently given birth and newborns , a children's intensive care unit and neonatology as well as a new ward for the gynecology / breast center were built.

During the global COVID-19 pandemic , more than 100 of the 2,300 employees were infected with the virus, so that the clinic came into the media's attention at the end of March / beginning of April 2020. Large numbers of patients were also infected, 47 patients died of COVID-19 in the clinic , only three of them were originally admitted as COVID-19 cases. Meanwhile, the public prosecutor's office is examining investigations against three senior doctors and the clinic's managing directors because they should not have reported infected people to the health department in a timely manner. In order to maintain operations during the pandemic, it was decided to restructure the clinic areas into three strictly separated areas: a black area with patients who tested positive for corona, white for patients who tested negative and gray for patients with outstanding results. Since the clinic did not provide the state government with the information requested about the infections after repeated requests, the clinic is now threatened with a fine. After two weeks, the clinic presented data on April 16, which, however, was warned as incomplete. In mid-June 2020 it became known that the public prosecutor's office was investigating three senior doctors and the management team at the time on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm.
