action

For a long time, a so-called phantom has kept investigators Captain Peter Fuchs, Lieutenant Jürgen Huebner and Lieutenant Lutz Zimmermann in suspense: the perpetrator always breaks into department stores or warehouses according to the same pattern, drills open the safe and disappears undetected. He leaves no traces. Despite modern IT technology, which Jürgen Huebner jokingly calls the “end of reason”, the perpetrators cannot be narrowed down. The ominous burglar is the young Justus Klann, who officially works as the lover of the pharmacist Marlies Heider in the magazine and is not allowed to serve customers due to a stuttering when excited. In the evening he commits the break-ins with the former burglary specialist Paul Kaulmann and regularly steals between 10,000 and 20,000 marks. Paul, however, is now suffering from a heart condition and actually wants to get out. Indirect threats to help the police investigate unresolved crimes of Paul prevent Paul from getting out.

During a break-in, Jupiter types the name of a former inmate into the typewriter out of boredom. The investigators turn to the former prisoner and try to discover a pattern behind the repeatedly recurring names. Justus' name is not mentioned. Meanwhile, he dreams of a better life. He wants to buy a villa with the stolen money, but Marlies doesn't take him seriously - in contrast to her daughter Sabine, who is in love with young Justus.

During a robbery, Paul suffers a heart attack and dies on the scene. Jupiter takes him to a park bench, where he is found the next morning. The investigators do not know that Justus has made common cause with him, but can tell from the last written name in which city the next attack will take place. Cameras are installed in all possible objects. In fact, Justus can be discovered when he breaks in. He manages to escape through the sewer system. Former inmates identify him using the images from the surveillance camera. Jupiter does not show up for work the next day, but the investigators secretly follow Sabine, who is going to Justus. Both flee together from the investigators with a stolen car. However, the streets are blocked off, so Justus gets a passport and drives the car into a tree as planned. Meanwhile, Sabine fetches an ambulance. Justus planned to break through the police cordon with the foreign passport and in an ambulance and to be able to escape later. However, he underestimated the force of the impact: He sustained such serious injuries that he will be partially paralyzed in the future and require nursing care. The looted money can be found in Marlies' drugstore. Marlies herself quickly comforted herself with another, younger man. Only Sabine mourns Justus.
