action

After five years of studying and qualifying as a forester, Jürgen Busse is returning to his home village of Bernroda in Thuringia . Here he takes over the supervision of the northern forest, in which trees are felled for the local furniture combine, among other things. The brigade working in the north forest is headed by Brigadier Wilhelm Bronski. He is not very enthusiastic to see Busse in the forest: For his studies, Busse once left Bronski's daughter Christine, who was pregnant by him without his knowledge. Christine consoled herself with other men and fast motorcycles. She has had a stiff leg since a motorcycle accident and needs a crutch to walk. She lives with her father with her son Thomas.

Bronski, however, has another reason to want to scare off buses: for a year now he has been manipulating the timber delivery in the sawmill. He measures the logs incorrectly, so that more wood is delivered than billed. He does this with Hans Freudenberg, the head of the supplied VEB Möbelkombinat, but also with his daughter. They sell the surplus wood undercover. When Willi Vietz, who had been supplied in this way, wanted to bring the wood to Berlin, he saw a police check at the city limits. He escapes with his truck and ultimately has a fatal accident at excessive speed.

The case will be handed over to Lieutenant Peter Fuchs. Since Lutz Subras is on a course and Peter Fuchs would not be able to do the job alone, Lieutenant Woltersdorf is assigned to him by the district authorities of the People's Police. Both find encrypted statements in Vietz's safe for funds that have flowed to F and B for the illegal timber transport, among others. The trail leads you to Bernroda. Soon, both in F and B suspect Freudenberg and Bronski, especially since Christine Bronski is Freudenberg's accountant and was able to present an exemplary account during an audit in the company.

Jürgen Busse has meanwhile become aware of the manipulation of the fixed meter. He sets Bronski down and instead lets his friend Palle measure the tree trunks. Busse also remeasured all the tree trunks already measured by Bronski and came up with considerable differences. Bronski is interrogated and confesses to the manipulation. Together with Freudenberg, he earned 200,000 marks in one year. Freudenberg used the money to please his demanding wife. Bronski also rebuilt his house for his daughter. Bronski and Freudenberg are arrested. Christine Bronski tries to escape with Thomas after Busse told her about the imminent arrest and emphasized that he loves her and will wait for her. Christine collapses in the woods as the police cars approach. Busse goes to her and helps her up.

production

Holzwege was filmed from March 28 to May 13, 1977 in Berlin and various cities and villages in Thuringia, including Finsterbergen and Oberhof . The costumes for the film were created by Christel Nowotny and Doris Seifert , the film structures were created by Günther Möller . The film had its television premiere on January 29, 1978 in the first program of East German television. The audience participation was 54.5 percent.

It was the 51st episode in the film series Polizeiruf 110 . First Lieutenant Peter Fuchs investigated his 32nd case. It was the first case of Lieutenant Woltersdorf, who was involved in the solution of 8 cases up to episode 64.

The critics called Holzwege a “veritable Heimatfilm ” according to its structural patterns : “There is the grown social community in a concrete landscape, which has also shaped the professions of people 'naturally', from which the now returning as 'stranger' Jürgen comes [...] The great love that breaks out again is one of these genre features as well as the father's 'poaching' of the common property for his daughter and grandson.
