action

Popular psychologist and non-fiction author Ralf Bohnke says goodbye to his wife Marianne because he wants to meet his lecturer in Berlin for work discussions. His wife is above all a housewife and employee. He has long since ceased to see her as an equal spouse and she subordinates herself completely and unconditionally to him. Marianne doesn't know that Ralf has a relationship with his editor Marlies Schmauch. They meet in Berlin and a short time later they drive to a lake, where Ralf shows off his motorboat and races across the lake with Marlies at high speed until she asks him, full of fear, to stop. Juliane Gerbach and her friend Frank have also arrived at the lake. 16-year-old Juliane is a child at home and Frank is her first great love. Both want to get married as soon as Juliane is of legal age. They swim out on the lake. Meanwhile, Ralf steals some miniature pictures from a water property where a move is taking place at Marlies' instructions. In high spirits, they flee from the crime scene by boat. Too late they see Frank swimming in the water. Ralf runs over the boy, but does not stop. A little later he hides the boat in the reeds, carries Marlies ashore and returns to his wife on the same day. He explains to her that the wife of someone he was trying to meet died unexpectedly and that he had returned prematurely from his trip as a result. Spontaneously he travels with Marianne, but a little later confesses his act to her. He pretends to be alone in the boat. Because he is the family's breadwinner, he convinces Marianne to take on the deed. He drafts her confession in detail and even practices motor boating with her again. He prepares the boat in such a way that only Marianne's fingerprints can be found. The wife who belongs to him wants to sacrifice herself for him.

Meanwhile, Frank's body is being recovered from the lake. Lieutenant Jürgen Huebner takes over the investigation and the search for the motorboat begins. After a while it is found by playing children. The investigators also secure the miniatures that Ralf threw into the water shortly after the accident. Ralf and Marianne are questioned and Marianne takes the blame as agreed. She reacts irritated when she learns that Ralf's editor is a woman, but follows Ralf's instructions. Her husband, on the other hand, is not even interested in the fate of his wife after his questioning, which Jürgen Hübner is surprised to see. For him, the case is clear, but the recently-fathered sub-lieutenant Richter expresses doubts. He does not trust Marianne to be cold-blooded as shown in the act. Jürgen Hübner suspects that she cannot even drive a motorboat, but Marianne proves the opposite in a test. However, she is allowed to return home as there is no risk of escape. Ralf insists that she gave false evidence, otherwise she would have been arrested. Marianne collapses in the face of the allegations and is hospitalized. Ralf, in turn, goes to Jürgen Huebner and insists on his wife's guilt.

The investigators set a trap for Ralf, Marianne and Marlies. While Marianne is still in the hospital, the investigators play Marlies a false invitation from Ralf to come to his house. Marlies seduces Ralf, who reacts irritably. She turns out to be manipulative and tries several times to blackmail him for the crime. Marianne catches them both red-handed. However, she is not ready to withdraw her confession. Only her neighbor, who likes her, testifies that Marianne spent the entire day in the garden of her property. The Losert couple, who own the stolen miniatures, also saw a man and a woman in the motorboat and can identify Ralf and Marlies as the perpetrators. Only now does Marianne admit her innocence and show anger at her manipulative husband. Ralf and Marlies are led away.
