The Zeuthener See from above

The Zeuthener See is a lake-like widening of the Dahme River in the Dahme Lake District in southeast Berlin on the border with Brandenburg . The border between Berlin and Brandenburg runs through the lake.

description

The Zeuthener See is part of the federal waterway Dahme-Wasserstraße of waterway class IV with restrictions; The Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible . The lake begins at km 0.0 of the Dahme waterway north of the Schmöckwitz road bridge and ends shortly before km 4 at Rauchfangswerder. There, the Sellenzugsee begins in the south and the Great Zug of the Wernsdorfer Seenkette in the northeast.

The Zeuthener See has a length of almost four kilometers. The width is between 100 and 800 meters. With an average depth of three meters and a maximum depth of 4.4 meters, this lake is not particularly deep. The bottom of the water is very uniformly covered with a thick layer of mud, hard gravel soil can only be found on the island of Zeuthener Wall.

The municipalities of Eichwalde and Zeuthen are located on its west bank in Brandenburg , on the north bank the Schmöckwitz district , which belongs to Berlin, and the Rauchfangswerder settlement, which still belongs to Berlin, to the south-east.

On the western side of the lake, there is little bank vegetation due to the settlements of the municipalities. The eastern side has strong reeds and here a forest adjoins the lake.

Ecological

The water quality of the lake, which is also used as a bathing lake, is checked regularly and was rated “excellent” in September 2007. The lake is as polymictic designated with slightly alkaline water. Due to the trophies , the visibility depth is barely 50 cm in summer.

The Selchower Flutgraben flows into the Zeuthener See. The Bürgererverein Berlin - Brandenburg eV documents its own investigations on its homepage about the initial suspicion of the discharge of toxic substances via the Selchower flood ditch into the Zeuthener See in 2005. This is in a certain contradiction to the measurements of the State of Berlin.

Zeuthen Wall

In the lake there is a small island with a size of 0.25 ha, called Zeuthener Wall, which belongs to Berlin and which was regularly used intensively by water sports enthusiasts in summer. In 1998, the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development issued an “Ordinance on the Protection of the Landscape Part of the Zeuthener Wall Island in the Köpenick District of Berlin” and brought about a renaturation through numerous measures ( bank protection ) .

Theodor Fontane and Hankel's shelf

On one of his “ walks through the Mark Brandenburg ”, Theodor Fontane wanted to penetrate to the lake and source areas of the “Wendish Spree”. The voyage with the “Sphinx” in July 1874 already put him in a state of excitement, as if it were an advance as far as the sea and headwaters of the Nile ”. This trip also took him across Lake Zeuthen.

Hankel's shelf is also located by the lake . Theodor Fontane describes Hankel's filing as a villa colony on the southern tip of Lake Zeuthen and one of the most charming places in the area around Berlin . It was named after the fisherman Friedrich Hankel , who settled at the former loading point, also known as the shelf , and who later also got serving rights. His sons and grandchildren developed the filing into a restaurant. In the Margraviate of Brandenburg, small transshipment facilities in the villages with water connections are predominantly referred to as storage . In the past, goods such as wood, coal, beets, straw and other mostly agricultural products were loaded there. For a long time they were an important place of communication for the population.

Economic and touristic importance

  • Water sports: The lake is used intensively for water sports, a number of sailing, canoeing, motorboat, rowing and fishing clubs have established themselves here.
  • Shipping: For professional shipping, the Zeuthener See is an important waterway for supplying the federal capital, via which mainly coal and building materials are transported from the inland port of the city of Königs Wusterhausen past Wildau, Zeuthen and Eichwalde to Berlin.
  • Fishing: The use of the lake for commercial fishing is likely to go back to the land grabbing of Slavic settlers in the 7th and 8th centuries AD. Even today there is still a large variety of fish in the water, which makes it popular with recreational anglers. The most important fish are lead, chub, roach, aland, perch, pike, pikeperch and eel. Large catfish also live in the lake.
  • Tourism: The importance of the Zeuthener See as a tourist destination begins at the latest with the connection to the railway. There is a campsite on the eastern bank.
